Loving Those Portuguese Still Wines with Liz Mendez of Vera

We know our Port but do we all give the still wines of Portugal enough attention? Listen in as Liz Mendez of Vera Restaurant in Chicago picks a few of her favs. Mendez is best known for her encyclopedic knowledge of Sherry, and she discussed this with me in my past Date with a Somm article in Somm Journal. Now, she goes into her second love of Portuguese wines, many of which are on her acclaimed wine list.

Now, tune in for her Portuguese wine suggestions below:

2012 Alvaro Castro, Encruzado, Dao Region Portugal

Mendez likens this to a Chardonnay, reminding her of Chablis and even a California Chardonnay with it’s body and weight. She feels that’s the connection for a consumer to make, to try this new wine.

Flavors range from lemon meringue pie due to richness of lees aging, plus a hint of sweetness rounds off the robust weight, This Encruzado also has a nice pop of acidity. Mendez feels this could please both the Sauvignon Blanc fan as well as the classic Chardonnay fan. She could see pairing this with crab, olives or a starter of Manchego cheese.

2011 Symington Pombal do Vesuvio,  Douro Valley,  Touriga Franca and Touriga National

Mendez considers this Douro Valley the “heart of Bordeaux” in Portugal. The aromas remind her of Bordeaux wines that are ready to drink, even while this is made of two indigenous grapes for the Douro region rather than those Bordeaux varietals. The structure is what reminds her distinctly of French wine even while this wine is a bit fresher tasting and approachable. It’s an extremely food friendly wine served at Vera, and she especially likes it with the classic dish Fabada, a white bean stew  with pork and chorizo.

Portugal has found its way into Mendez’s heart and she adores promoting these wines at the restaurant.

Master Somm Willie Sherer Taste Wines for the Holidays

Happy Holidays to you All! What better way to toast this holiday season than will wine suggestions from

MS Willie Sherer at Redd Restaurant

Today, it’s a fun and interesting conversation with the venerable Master Sommelier Willie Sherer at Redd Restaurant in Yountville, Ca. With the holidays in mind, we tasted a few gems that he’s crazy about. Listen and see….

2014 Somm Rose of Tannat, California

We first go to a full-bodied Rosé, Sherer’s own Somm Rosé made from the Tannat grape which he sources here in California. A fan of the underdog grape, Sherer makes this wine in a lean style, full of body and deep fruit flavors. It resembles the color of a Provencal Rosé but has more heft to hold up nicely for a holiday meal.

Next Wine:

2013 Vinaredo Souson, Valdeorras Galicia Spain

This lesser known Souson grape is produced mostly in the Galicia region of Spain. Typically served with the food of the region, the coastal area is known more for seafood, even grilled fish, octopus and seafood , especially oily fish. He deems it a “fish wine”, which is more difficult to come by.

The wine’s full of aromas and flavors of cranberries, boysenberries,  and herbs like thyme and roasted sage. It would be great with venison, lamb, roasted meat, just in time for the holidays.

Sherer also suggest a few other categories of wines for the holidays, such as the Northern Rhone Valley, Cornas, and Cote Rotie where Syrah is the main grape. He feels Syrah is being made better than ever here in California, “in the purest sense.” It is great with a signatory holiday meal, with the spice, pepper and meaty qualities. There are many great producers in Napa and Sonoma. Arnold Roberts, Miner Family

Sommelier Jon McDaniel has something important to say– he loves his Italian wines. Wine Director at Chicago’s Acanto, along with the rest of Lawless Restaurant Group’s properties (Beacon Tavern, The Gage, The Dawson), McDaniel reaches far and wide with his mostly Italian wine list, which includes approximately 500 wines from all 20 regions across Italy. McDaniel discusses his passion for Italian varietals, even if they may come from regions outside of Italy, such as Virginia and California. The wines we’re tasting today include:

2012 Sartori di Verona, Bianco Verenese IGT, Gargenega– 15-20% of these grapes are produced in “appassimento” style (dried for 40 days), producing a wine with lots of layers. This white wine is a great pairing wine and has decent amount of acidity to work with the pasta and meat dishes at Acanto. It’s a full body white wine made from a classic grape from the Veneto region yet done in a more experimental manner, borrowing a technique more commonly used for red wine, in particular Amarone.

2010 Nebbiolo, Barboursville, Virginia The shorter growing season in Virginia is a challenge, as is the rain. Nevertheless, this volatile area produces stunning Nebbiolo, in a more modern manner with more fruit, moderate oak and a lush mouth feel.

“3 Liter Thursday” are a super fun time to join John at Acanto. Check on their website for the upcoming tastings.

Rueda Verdejo

2013 Bodegas Naia “Naia” Verdejo– Stainless steel fermented, this fresh, pure and almost tropical white is a true representation of the area. It’s clean and crisp, an easy wine on a hot summer day.

2013 Bodegas Naia “Naiades” Verdejo. This version is aged in barrel, bringing out more of the tropical components in the Verdejo grape.

Ribera del Duero Reds

2013 Antidoto Soria Ribera Del Duero DO This fresh red wine is a crowd pleaser, full of ripe fruit and moderate acidity.

2010 Vega Sicilia Valbuena, Ribera del Duero This wine is deep, rich, sophisticated…need we say more? It’s a beauty and iconic in this region.

He recently returned from travel to the region and looks forward to returning. And in case you missed the last few shows with Ford, you can find them here:

Join us as we continue our wine tasting series with Rachel Driver Speckan of City Winery Chicago. Today, we sip on a dry Riesling from Oregon , one Speckan admires and still has a bottle awaiting her, tucked in her home cellar. While she admits that dry Riesling can be difficult to explain to customers and isn’t exactly “hotcakes” jumping off the list, this is one she gets excited to talk about.  The producer, Big Table Farm, is a small producer, making most wines in Oregon’s Willamette Valley.

Next, we take a virtual journey to South Africa on Speckan’s life-altering trip. She met with winemaker Hannes Storm in the South Cape of South Africa (@StormWinesSA). We tasted his classic Pinot Noir, which comes from land with close proximity to the ocean. Speckan firmly believes it has an old world soul and it’s one of her current obsessions.

Wines we tasted included:

2011 Big Table Farm Riesling, Willamette Valley, Oregon

2013 Storm Pinot Noir, Hemel-en-Aarde, Southern Cape of South Africa

Virtually sip a few great wine recommendations by Chicago’s fabulous Purple Pig Wine Director Liz Martinez. Hear about the dominantly Old World wine list and how Martinez pairs it to 2014 James Beard Award Winning Rising Star Chef Jimmy Bannos, Jr. Curious about orange wine? Hear how this Pinot Grigio gets that hue and more on outstanding and unusual grape varietals. Today we tasted the following:

2015 Pullus Pinot Grigio, Slovenia Rust in hue, this rose of Pinot Grigio is a fine easy summer sipper. Great with light fish and salads, it could also stand up to one of the seared fish dishes on the menu. The fruit is bright, the acidity moderate to high and the eye appeal amazing.

2014 San Salvatore Aglianico, Campania, Italy  This is one of the many unusual selections across the list at the Pig, hailing from the lesser known but impressive Campania region.  While there’s a touch of oak, it’s mostly bright red fruits shining through in this lighter bodied Aglianico wine.
