Holiday Wine Tasting with Hugh Davies

This is Part 2 of an interview with Hugh Davies of Schramsberg Vineyards and Davies Vineyards. This week, we taste a line-up of wines: two sparklers and one Davies Cabernet blends from this historic property. Schramsberg Vineyards date back to the 19th century, when German immigrant Jacob Schram first made his home and started his winery on Diamond Mountain. In 1965, a century later, Jack and Jamie Davies restored the estate and set out to make world-class California sparkling wines. Hugh carries on his family tradition and in a nod to the original founder, sharing their vintage namesake wine with us today. Visit the property and tour the caves on your next visit to Napa Valley.  Continue reading

Schramsberg Vineyards has been producing fine tiny bubbles for decades, serving wine to royalty and dignitaries, along with local fans. Listen as CEO and Winemaker Hugh Davies tells us about his twenty plus years working with his folks Jack and the late Janie Davies , who bought the property over fifty years ago. Nestled up Highway 29, near Calistoga, you can experience the caves where the sparkling wine is stores through secondary fermentation, quite unique to the area.

Davies gives us the update on sourcing their grapes from cooler areas such as the Sonoma Coast and the Russian River. The estate property is now dedicated to fruit for the Davies Cabernet Sauvignon, grown right there in the Diamond Mountain AVA. There’s a lot of excitement now in fall of 2016 as they prepare to open a new tasting room in St. Helena for tasting these wines. As this brand moves forward, Davies and his team take great upholding environmentally sound practices in the vineyards.

Davies also tells us about Camp Schramsberg, a 2-day immersion into the process of sparkling wine harvest and production that you can participate in.  Listen and you shall learn how to get involved, taste the wines and enjoy.

Quentin Paillard of Pierre Paillard Champagne in Bouzy Talks Family Tradition and New Winemaking

Play

It’s the story of two brothers, the eight generation in their family’s Pierre Paillard Champagne legacy, dating back to 1768.  Quentin, along with his brother Antoine, under the guidance of their father Benoit, are committed to growing organic grapes, 60% of which are Pinot Noir, located on 11 hectares in Bouzy Champagne. Their most current effort is towards biodynamic growing.

The 250 year history of the family comes through in the winemaking, although Quentin traveled the wine world over to bring new techniques to Pierre Paillard, as well. We tasted  the lovely 2010 Bouzy Blanc de Noir Les Maillerettes, which showed bright red fruits along with a mildly saline finish. The acidity is refreshing and the light blush color appealing. This wine is part of the Robert Houde Wines portfolio and the tasting was held at the award-winning Blanchard Restaurant in Chicago’s Lincoln Park.
